Above the town, Calpe spreads into villa urbanisations: Maryvilla on the slopes of the Sierra de Toix, Ortembach, Oltamar at around two hundred metres above sea level, Gran Sol, Colina del Sol, Empedrola, Garduix, and on the other side Cometa and Carrió. These are lovely places to live and difficult places to find. A car is needed to get down to the beach, and a stranger needs more than a street name to get up to you.
When you are locked out, the minutes spent looking for your gate are minutes you spend outside. Here is how to make sure they are not wasted.
Send a location pin, not an address
On WhatsApp: the paperclip or plus icon, then Location, then Send your current location. Do it while standing at your gate, not from the terrace or the road below. The pin lands exactly where you are, and it opens straight into the locksmith’s navigation.
An address is useful as well, but many urbanisation addresses were never designed for navigation: the same street name may continue in two places, and numbering does not always follow an order you can drive along.
Say what the gate looks like
“White wall, green gate, two palm trees, blue car outside” gets someone to the right house faster than any number, especially at night. If the house number is not visible from the road, say so.
Mention anything in the way
- A barrier or a gatehouse at the entrance to the urbanisation, and whether it needs a code or a call.
- A very steep or narrow final stretch, so a van can decide whether to park below.
- Dogs, yours or the neighbours’.
- Which door is the problem: the gate, the front door, or the terrace door at the back.
Put the pin somewhere guests can find it
If you let the villa, put a location pin and a photo of the gate in the booking message and in the house manual. The guest who cannot find the house at midnight will not find it any more easily when locked out.
