When to act
Signs a lock needs attention
- The key needs wiggling or pulling slightly to turn
- Green or white powder around the keyway
- The cylinder turns but the bolt catches halfway
- The cylinder sticks out of the handle plate
- You do not know how many copies of the key exist
Clean it, or change it?
Stiffness caught early is a cleaning job: flushing out salt and old grease and using a dry lubricant made for cylinders. Corrosion that has reached the pins is not, and trying to free it with oil only buys a few weeks.
What we fit and repair
On timber and metal doors, and on the cylinder of almost any door.
Euro cylinders
Standard, anti-snap and anti-bump cylinders, cut to the right length for your door and handle plate.
Mortice and surface locks
Older locks on town houses and villa doors, repaired where parts exist and replaced where they do not.
Storage rooms, garages and letterboxes
The locks in a tower block that nobody thinks about until a key goes missing.
Garden gates
Gate locks on villas and bungalows, which take the weather harder than any front door.
Multipoint strips, gearboxes and terrace sliders are a different mechanism: uPVC and aluminium door repairs. After a forced entry, go to burglary repair instead.
New owners
Bought a home in Calpe?
Calpe is the only large Spanish town with more foreign residents than Spanish ones, and a resale flat has usually passed through several hands: agents, cleaners, former tenants, neighbours who kept a key for emergencies. Changing the front door cylinder costs far less than wondering.
Holiday lets
Cylinders changed between seasons, or after a guest leaves with a key. Hosts with several properties can see what we do for holiday lets.
Lock replacement questions
Can a seized lock be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?
A cylinder that has only stiffened can often be cleaned, lubricated with the right product and kept. One where the pins have corroded inside, which the sea air does in time, is replaced. We look before recommending either.
What is an anti-snap cylinder, and do I need one?
A euro cylinder designed to break at a sacrificial line so the part that holds the cam stays in the door. If your door has a euro cylinder that sticks out of the handle plate, an anti-snap or anti-bump replacement is worth it, especially on a ground floor or a villa.
I have just bought a flat. Which locks should I change first?
The front door cylinder, on day one. Then the garage, storage room and letterbox if they use their own keys. The communal street door belongs to the community of owners, so ask the administrator before touching it.
Will a new cylinder fit my existing door?
Almost always. Euro cylinders come in set lengths on each side, and we measure before fitting so the new one sits flush with the handle plate rather than standing proud of it.
How much does a lock replacement cost?
The cylinder is the main variable, from a standard one to an anti-snap model with a security card. You get the options and prices before anything is fitted.
